After breakfast, Mar sent two messages, one to the barracks informing them he’d be unavailable for the day and another to the chancellor, advising him of today’s plans. After grabbing a map from Woron’s saddlebag, he returned to the house, stopped, and sighed. As expected, Ina had nothing planned. When he asked her how she would like to proceed with her underground investigation, he got the answer, “We’ll go down and see.”

Mar placed the map on the table and pointed to the city’s outskirts. “Most of the disappearances happened there.” Mar circled the area on the map. He pointed to another object. “Here are the Swarożyc temple catacombs. That’s the entrance to the tunnel system, unless, of course, you want to start with the sewers?”

Ina traced the tunnels with her finger, and he noticed how fascinated she was by the detailed map. Mar realised she didn’t know how complicated the tunnel system was until he laid it clear in front of her.

“We’ll start from the temple and check this quarter first.” She circled the district. “If we can’t find anything there, we can move towards the city centre.” Ina smiled at Mar. “I have made something for the occasion.”

He raised his eyebrows when she returned, holding a vial with milk like fluid. “Ina, what am I looking at?”

Closing her fingers over the vial, she answered proudly, “Our light source. I will show you in the tunnel.” She grinned and packed her various vials into her bag. In the meantime, Mar went to saddle Woron.

The ride through the town was a pleasant experience. Mar enjoyed Ina’s embrace, and her voice, commenting on every new shop or exciting event, had a soothing effect. When they arrived at the temple, he left Woron at a nearby stable. Now, they only had to convince a volkhv to let them in.

Ina proved to be a very resourceful woman, and he learned a few exciting secrets from her university times. A few coins exchanged hands, and an old volkhv led them to the tunnel entrance under the pretence of being a pair of thrill-seekers. Mar was initially sceptical when Ina suggested this charade, but she convinced him it was a popular attraction, especially for the junior years. It worked well, and he had to admit she was more skilled at dealing with people than he was.

As soon as the Gods’ servant disappeared, Ina pulled out one of her vials. “Now watch this.” She uncorked it and threw a small pebble inside. Mar was watching as instructed. Initially, nothing happened, but when he was about to avert his eyes, a sudden blinding light burst out.

“Bloody hell, Ina, you could have warned me!” he sputtered, now completely blind, rubbing his eyes with her gentle chuckle as the only answer. After he could see again, Mar could appreciate her invention fully. The light was now soft and steady, revealing the cause of the musty smell from the tunnel ahead. There were piles of bones everywhere, with only a narrow passage between them.
